Linux Utilities

Linux Utilities of Everyday Use (at least to me)
  • Yakuake
As a KDE user I have learned to hate/love Konsole (the default KDE terminal program) since it is very powerful but sometimes “cumbersome”. Yakuake has done the magic for me: it is a “Quake style” console that slips down from the top of the screen on a specific key press (default: F12) and supports tabs. Awesome.
  • puf:
puf stands for “Parallel URL Fectcher” and is a program similar to curl or wget, yet even more powerful!
  • Rootkit Hunter
This is a very powerfull tool for keeping the most common rootkits, backdoors and local exploits.
  • Kate (KDE Advanced Text Editor):
The best graphical editor for the Penguin in my humble opinion (yet available on MacOs and various Unixes, soon on Win too!)
  • Kile – an integrated LaTeX environment:
This is, in my humble opinion, the best ever environment for writing LaTeX documents on GNU/Linux. The only rival Kile has is TeXnicCenter, but the latter is thought for Windows (and is a favorite of mine too).
